Review: Russian Roulette by Alex Alder

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Length: Novella
Requested

Blurb: When the new neighbor first moves in, Jacob thinks everything is going to be perfect: Nate is smart, funny, gorgeous, and basically everything Jacob ever wanted wrapped up in a pretty green-eyed package. But when a string of horrific murders starts up in the city shortly after Nate’s arrival, his new neighbor’s quiet, reclusive nature starts to take on new meaning. Jacob could be falling in love with the serial killer next door, and he may very well have to risk everything he cares about in order to make it out alive.

Reviewed by Stacey Jo: Jacob is a martial arts instructor who has been alone for quite some time. Nate is his gorgeous new neighbor that moves in next door. They quickly hit it off and start dating. They make for a cute couple. Both have a lot of issues in their past that they need to deal with that affects their relationship but they make a good pair in and out of bed. But Jacob is bothered by Nate's secretive behavior and the fact that even after months of dating, Nate still won't allow Jacob into his apartment. Then, the murders start and at first it's thought that they could be copy cat murders of a serial killer from Dallas, until it's later determined that it's the actual killer. But Nate is from Dallas, and he's acting weird. So Jacob, out of fear and desperation, makes a big assumption and goes to a student/friend who is a cop and tells him his theory on Nate. Nate is understandably furious of the breach of trust. It's because of Jacob though that the police are able to get the information they need to locate the killer and we ultimately get our happily ever after.

I enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and seemed shorter than the 150 pages that it is. I liked the characters. I wouldn't call it gripping though. I felt like if it were a bit longer, with more depth, or character development maybe, or just more meat to the story, it would have been an "A" for me. I felt like I was "on the surface" of something. It was also predictable. There were a few parts where I said to myself "this is what's going to happen" and sure enough, that is exactly what happened. That didn't make me like the book less, it just takes away some of the excitement when I can already figure out what's going to happen. It's like reading ahead. So despite my two gripes, I did like the book, and would recommend it if you want a light romance that is not mind bending, or heavy reading that doesn't take much time to read.
